THE PEARL HOTEL, SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

If you’re in or near San Diego, check out The Pearl Hotel. As the Ace is to Palm Springs and The Avalon is to Beverly Hills, The Pearl is a mid-centruy modern motel turned hipster paradise.  A little sprucing up, well-chosen paint and the word “boutique” can do wonders for a property.

What’s really cool at The Pearl though, is their poolside Dive-In Movie series. It’s free to hotel guests and the public can enjoy it for the cost of single drink. Films are screened every Wednesday night, projected onto a 10′ x 13′ foot screen with full sound. Showtime is 8:00 pm; with food served at the adjacent restaurant until 10:00 (the bar stays open until 11). All seating is first come, first serve of course, though cabanas are available for rent.

I’m guessing if you come for the movie and are wearing a suit, no one is going to stop you from swimming. That’s the point of a dive-in movie, right?

They’re showing “Beetlejuice” on Halloween. November 2012 movies include The Big Lebowski on the 14th, The Royal Tenenbaums on the 28th. The programming is eclectic with some kid-friendly options as well.
