TERRANEA RESORT has 3 pools. The property is on the site of the old  “Marineland” water theme park (Think: Sea World). Now it’s a luxurious, sophisticated resort built into the side of a cliff—Palm Springs meets the ocean. There are 3 pools—one for adults only, cantilevered over the coast, with a slew of modern chaise lounges all facing the dramatic view.  At the main pool there are 10 cabanas available to rent and plenty of ocean-facing chaise lounges, too. There’s also a waterslide and spray fountain, two hot tubs and a fire pit. The rainbow of striped glass tile along the water’s surface, along with the swaying palm trees reads like visual music—a festive, celebratory atmosphere at the edge of the world.

Summer’s must get quite crowded, but we were there during a quiet February—picked the kids up from school in L.A. on a rainy Friday and by 4pm they were swimming in the ultra-heated, rain-free Terrenea pool (not sure why the rain stopped as soon as we hit the city limits!). We brought the thick robes down from the room as a great post-swim warm-up.  And dinner at Nelson’s, perched directly over the ocean and lined with benches and fire pits, was the perfect end to the day.
