THE POOL AT THE OMNI, SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

THE OMNI San Diego isn’t conventionally spectacular. It’s modern and upscale. Contemporary. Most famously: The property is a skybridge away from the San Diego Padres baseball stadium PETCO Park, right next door. Some rooms (and common spaces) even have views of the field. It’s in downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, which makes it close to galleries, eateries, shopping, night life. Something about all that—the excitement of the ballpark, the crispness of the interior spaces—gives it a happy and upbeat vibe—whether baseball is in season or not.

The Omni pool is on the 6th floor roof deck. Sadly, you can’t see the stadium from the deck, but the view of the bay, the skyline, Coronado island on a clear day, is pretty awesome. It’s often windy, but the water is nicely heated. And heres the best thing: when you’re underwater, you can hear music. This is the only place so far where I’ve heard music underwater—and only underwater. It’s not music being played on the terrace that’s so loud you can hear it underwater. It’s actual underwater music. I’m sure the deck and adjoining bar get pretty crowded at times (like after ball games), but it’s often empty during games and off-season, my kids pretty much had the run of the place. And with so few people around, they were hardly even embarrassed by my underwater dancing.
