HOMESTEAD RESORT SPRING, MIDWAY, UTAH

Okay, I readily admit, this barely qualifies as a hotel pool. And THE HOMESTEAD RESORT does have perfectly respectable indoor and outdoor pools (and a golf course, mountain views, meeting space and a charming country setting). They have something way cooler too. The Homestead Crater is an underground geothermal spring hidden within a 55-foot tall, beehive-shaped limestone rock, and it sits on the resort property. Just say that out loud: underground geothermal spring. On the hotel’s property.

As I hope you can see in the photo, the hole at the top of the dome lets in light and air, which according to the website, allows the interior to stay heated by the water at a toasty 90 to 96 degrees. It even says toasty. I didn’t add that.

There’s a tunnel through the rock wall so guests can walk in and swim, scuba dive, snorkel or just soak up the wonder. Even though it is on the resort property, it’s a tourist attraction all it’s own with scuba classes, certification programs, snorkel tours. A 40 minute dip will set you back $11 per person.  I’m not sure if the Homestead offers packages to overnight guests. If they don’t, they should.

You take an elevator down underground and into the pool area. I imagine it’s like swimming in a tunnel…better yet, a cave. No plans to visit Utah in the near future, but if we do, we are so there.
